Halloween Haunts

The North West of England offers a variety of family-friendly Halloween activities and events that you can enjoy with your children. Keep in mind that specific events may vary from year to year, so it’s a good idea to check local listings and event websites for the most up-to-date information. Here are some ideas:

  1. Pumpkin Picking: There are some fantastic places for pumpkin picking in the North West including Kenyon Hall farm in Cheshire, Kenyon Hall Farm is well-known for its pumpkin picking event. They typically offer a wide variety of pumpkins and squash, as well as other autumn activities like corn mazes and hayrides. Poplar Farm in Preston is a family-run farm that often hosts pumpkin picking events during the autumn season. They have a selection of pumpkins and gourds for you to choose from. Red Bank Farm in Preston is known for its pumpkin festival where you can pick your own pumpkins. They also offer scenic views of Morecambe Bay. Windmill animal farm in Ormskirk often hosts pumpkin picking events with a range of pumpkin varieties. They also have a farm park with animals and play areas. Claremont Farm in the Wirral is a popular spot for pumpkin picking in the Wirral area. They typically offer a variety of pumpkin-related activities and attractions.  
  2. Ghost Tours: Some cities in the North West offer family-friendly ghost tours that explore the haunted history of the area. These tours are typically led by knowledgeable guides who share spooky stories and folklore.

Some great ones are Chester, Chester Ghost Tours offer a variety of guided ghost walks that explore the city’s haunted history. The “Gory Tour” and the “Haunted Chester Tour” are popular options. Liverpool have Shiverpool, this is a well-known company in Liverpool that offers entertaining and informative ghost tours. They have several different themed tours, including “Auld City Ghost Walk” and “Hope Street Shivers.” Manchester Ghost Walks offer guided tours through Manchester’s haunted sites. Their tours include “Manchester Ghost Walk,” which explores the city center’s spooky history. The Lancaster Castle Ghost Tour takes you through Lancaster Castle, one of the most haunted locations in the area. It’s a unique experience with a focus on the castle’s chilling history. While not in the North West, York is relatively close and is famous for its ghost tours. It’s known as one of the most haunted cities in the UK, with various companies offering ghost walks, such as The Original Ghost Walk of York, this is a great one and is highly recommended from personal experience!!

Halloween Workshops and Craft Activities: Look for local art centers or museums that host Halloween-themed workshops and craft activities where children can create spooky decorations or costumes. There are some great ones coming up soon, for instance, The wheelbarrow at Greenbanks sports academy in Liverpool are offering a Halloween wreath making workshop on the 27th October, Ramsbottom Pottery Workshops are offering a Pumpkin sculpture workshop and a Parent and child Halloween workshop on various days in September & October. Grub in Manchester have various Halloween workshops throughout October, offering a pumpkin plant hanger workshop, and a Ghoul buntin workshop amongst other spooky events throughout October.           
  2. Museums and Heritage Sites: Check out local museums and heritage sites that may offer Halloween-themed exhibits, storytelling sessions, or historical reenactments with a spooky twist. Some great ones coming up are the Museum of Liverpool, they often host family-friendly Halloween events and activities, including spooky storytelling, craft workshops, and themed exhibitions. The museum of Science & Industry in Manchester has previously hosted Halloween-themed events, science experiments, and special exhibitions during the Halloween season. Tullie House in Carlisle has been known to offer Halloween-themed activities and events for kids, including craft workshops and themed tours. While not a museum per se, the Blackpool Heritage Tram Tours sometimes offer special Halloween tram rides with storytelling and entertainment. Some museums in Cheshire, such as the Grosvenor Museum in Chester, may offer Halloween events and workshops.
