Luton Operating Rules

Operating a tail lift on a Luton hire van is fairly straightforward, but you must follow safety steps carefully. Here’s a general guide — but always read the instructions provided by the hire company or on the lift itself, as systems may vary slightly by model (e.g., DEL, Ratcliff, Dhollandia, etc.).

🛑 Before You Start: Safety Checks

  • Engine off, handbrake on.
  • Ensure you’re on level ground.
  • Make sure nobody is standing near the tail lift.
  • Check for a key or isolator switch (often needed to power the tail lift).
  • Look for any damage or hydraulic leaks.

Step-by-Step: How to Operate a Tail Lift

1. Turn on the Power

  • Locate the isolation key switch (often in the cab or near the rear of the van).
  • Turn the key to the ON position or press the power button.

2. Unfold or Lower the Lift

  • Go to the tail lift control panel — usually mounted at the rear corner of the vehicle.
  • Use the DOWN or LOWER button to bring the platform to the ground.
  • If the platform is folded up, you may need to:
    • Press UNFOLD or OPEN to release it from its travel position.
    • Then press DOWN to lower it fully.

3. Load or Unload

  • Carefully place the load evenly on the platform.
  • Ensure weight is within the lift limit (typically 500–1000 kg).
  • Keep your feet clear, and make sure load is stable.

4. Raise the Platform

  • Use the UP or LIFT button to raise the platform to van floor height.
  • Carefully move your load into or out of the van.

5. Stow the Lift

  • When finished, use the UP button to lift the empty platform.
  • Press the FOLD or STOW button (if applicable) to fold the platform upright.
  • Some lifts may require manual folding and latching into place.

6. Turn Off the System

  • Return to the power switch and turn it off.
  • Remove the key if it uses one.

⚠️ Tail Lift Safety Tips

  • Never exceed the maximum weight limit.
  • Stand clear of the lift while operating.
  • Don’t ride on the platform unless it’s specifically rated for personnel.
  • Keep hands and feet clear of moving parts.
  • Use side barriers or safety rails if fitted.
  • If the lift stops working, do not force it — call the hire company.
