Many household items can be reused or recycled- so it is important to organise and pack with this in mind. This will make it far easier when you go to Wigans local waste and recycling centres.

Where can I take household waste in Wigan?

Within the Wigan Borough we have three household waste and recycling centres:

  • Kirkless, Makerfield Way, Higher Ince, WN2 2PR
  • Slag Lane, Leigh, WA3 1BZ
  • Chanters Industrial Estate, Arley Way, M46 9BP

Open 7 days a week (Summer 8am- 7:45pm, Winter 9am-5:45). Before travelling please check Wigan Councils visitor guide to ensure your items will be permitted. Guide information from 2026:

  • Any vehicles over 3.5 tonnes will not be allowed in any centre
  • Trailers over 3 meters will not be allowed at Slag Lane or Chanters
  • Trailers over 4 meters long will not be allowed at Kirkless
  • 2 meter hight restriction
  • Tipping equipment cannot be used
  • Speed bumps in use at sight and 5mph speed limits
  • Access to those misusing the waste recycling permit or being abusive will be removed.

What can you recycle in Wigan?

One of the easiest ways to make your clear-out faster and more environmentally responsible is to separate your waste before you travel.

Wigans recycling centres accept:

  • Paper and Cardboard– Old boxes, books and cardboard can be separated from general waste.
  • Glass and Plastics– Glass bottles and jars, pots and certain hard plastics are accepted.
  • Metal– cans, foil, wire and scrap metals such as aluminium, brass and copper can be recycled.
  • Electrical items– Electrical appliances like kettles, toasters, washing machines etc… can be recycled. Batteries should be removed and recycled separately when possible.
  • Wood and Garden waste– Timber, Wood and garden waste.
  • Hazardous waste– Asbestos, Pesticide, Gas bottles, Paint and chemicals.
  • General Waste– Items that cannot be reused or recycled.
