5 Places to visit near Wigan with a Hire Car.

Visiting friends or family? Unsure what to do in the area or just looking for places to travel locally? We have a few recommendations close to our Wigan branch- making it easy to book a car for hire and explore the area! We are located approximately a 5 minute walk from Wigan Wallgate Railway Station at 44 Queen Street, Wigan, WN3 4HX.

1) Beacon Country Park, Up Holland

This beautiful park covers 300 acres of rolling hills, green fields and quiet woodlands. Ideal for families, dog walkers or anyone who loves nature! Free to visit its worth checking out, it can be surprising what stunning sights are on your doorstep at Wigan.

With large grassy fields its ideal for outdoor games and picnics! Beacon Country Park also has a children’s play area for the little ones to enjoy. Famous for its Panoramic Views which allows you to look out across Lancashire across to the Liverpool skyline and Mersey docs.

2) Haigh Woodland Park

If you live around the Wigan area, you have most likely been to Haigh Hall- with great walking routes and views it is a great trip out for the family. Haigh Hall also runs a variety of activities from guided nature walks, family story times and spa days so its worth keeping up to date on their website when planning a visit. There is also a Kitchen Courtyard holding a fresh bakery, popular café, farm shop, Ice cream and more!

When parking your hire vehicle at Haigh Hall there is a large car park with several disability bays located close to the park itself. Open from 6am to 7:30 in Spring and Summer you have plenty of time to explore!

3) Rivington Pike

Rivington Pike is a beautiful walk around a 30 minutes drive from Wigan town centre.

Beginning at Rivington Hall Barn, which has a large free car park, you start heading towards Rivington terraced gardens. Throughout your walk up to the top of Rivington Pike you will see ravines, man-made caves, the stunning Japanese Garden and more!

The track up to Rivington Pike is fairly steep! So take your time and rest when necessary. But once you reach the top, if the weather is on your side, you’ll be able to see as far as Cheshire, The Lake District and Isle of Man!

4) Orrell Water Park

Just under a 20 minute drive from Wigan Town Centre is Orrell Water park, a stunning nature reserve and a coarse fishery. Paths are suitable for prams to walk around the two former reservoirs. Both lakes are stocked with carp and day fishing tickets can be purchased from the café! With a small playground near the café, Orrell Water Park is an ideal location for a family day out!

5) Fairy Glen

Located north of Appley Bridge village and a mile east of Parbold, its a fantastic little spot for a dog walking or family adventures.

One of the best attractions to Fairy Glenn is it’s waterfalls which are beautiful all year round. Fairy Glenn also has a range of wildlife from Buzzards, Grey Herons and Frogs depending on the time of day and year!

Although there is no designated car park available at Fairy Glen, there is a lay-by around 100 yards from the gate. Parking here is free but limited. Without a café facility, it would be encouraged to create your own lunch and turn it into a picnic with the family!
