Pre-Authorization Deposits Explained
at Easihire Preston
A pre-authorization deposit (often called a “pre-auth” or “security hold”) is taken when you rent a van to protect Easihire against potential risks during the hire period. It’s not an actual charge — it’s a temporary hold on your card. See below; Pre-Authorization Deposits Explained for our Van Hire in Preston.

Here’s why it’s required:
Protection Against Damage
Vans are larger and more prone to minor scrapes, dents, or interior damage (especially for moving or commercial use). The pre-auth ensures funds are available if:
- The vehicle is returned damaged
- There’s excessive wear and tear
- The interior is heavily soiled
Insurance Excess Coverage
We include insurance with an excess (deductible). If damage occurs, the deposit helps cover that excess until any claim is resolved.
Fuel & Mileage Adjustments
If the van isn’t returned:
- With the agreed fuel level
- Within mileage limits
- On time
The deposit can cover refuelling, extra mileage, or late return fees.
Fraud Prevention
It confirms:
- The card is valid
- The hirer has sufficient funds
- The cardholder matches the booking
How It Works
- We place a hold on your credit/debit card.
- The amount reduces your available balance but isn’t withdrawn.
- If everything is fine on return, the hold is then released.
- Release timing depends on your bank (often 3–10 business days).
